“Galinda didn’t see the verdant world through the glass of the carriage; she saw her own reflection instead…She reasoned that because she was beautiful she was significant…” (Maguire 84)
I want to retell Galinda’s character and tell more of a back story concerning her past and childhood, like as what we read with Elphaba. My retelling will be inserted at the beginning of “Galinda” with her childhood, and ending within the first few days of arriving at Shiz.
Plot:
-
Galinda is raised by Ama Clutch, because her parents were never around much.
-
She grows up feeling neglect from her parents, but also from Ama Clutch because she didn’t devote as much time as she should have to Galinda.
-
Galinda never learns to be independent, but is always depending on Ama Clutch for everything. She can’t go anywhere or do anything without her, so the time that Ama Clutch doesn’t spend with her, Galinda stays alone mostly.
-
Upon being accepted at Shiz, Galinda is upset by her parent’s uncaring and goes on her way there with Ama Clutch.
-
Traveling on the train to Shiz, Galinda and Ama Clutch are seated in a compartment with Doctor Dillamond, an Animal.
-
Ama Clutch is appalled because she believes that Animals shouldn’t have rights, but Galinda is extremely interested.
-
When they get to Shiz, Galinda notices Elphaba right away and they hit it off after realizing they have similar pasts.
-
They room together, despite Ama Clutch’s disapprovement, and fight for Animal rights together against Madame Morrible and the Wizard of Oz.
Characters:
-
Galinda – A beautiful girl, however she’s shy and insecure and very dependent on others, including Ama Clutch and especially Elphaba after meeting her. She and Elphaba form a bond and work together to fight for Animal rights.
-
Elphaba – An average looking girl with green skin, however she is extremely independent and confident of herself. She guides the dependent Galinda through life at Shiz and informs her of everything going on with the issue of Animals.
-
Galinda’s Parents – wealthy, beautiful people who didn’t raise Galinda due to never being home.
-
Ama Clutch – raises Galinda but doesn’t devote much time to her, is not very kind or caring towards her, and doesn’t believe Animals should have rights whatsoever. She looks down on anything that Galinda believes in.
